I often get questions from clients about the area's outdoor recreation. While Delaware is best known for its beautiful beaches, wooded hiking trails, and parks, did you know there are also great ski resorts within three hours of driving? If you're ready for some winter fun, I've got you covered!
Living in Delaware, we have to set our expectations—think smaller mountains and the occasional patch of ice. This isn’t the Alps! But the upside? If you can learn to ski here, you can ski anywhere.
Let’s dive into my top three ski resorts within a three-hour drive of Wilmington:
1. Blue Mountain Resort (Blue Mountain, Pennsylvania)

Blue Mountain Resort is my top choice for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Located less than two hours from Delaware, it offers a diverse range of terrain, from beginner slopes to black diamonds, plus a solid terrain park.
What I love about Blue Mountain:
• Extensive Trail Runs: With over 39 trails, there’s something for everyone.
• Night skiing: I’ve only tried night skiing once, but it was such a fun experience!
2. Camelback Mountain Resort (Tannersville, Pennsylvania)

Camelback Mountain Resort is another fantastic option for a winter getaway, located about 2.5 hours from Delaware. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, Camelback offers a variety of slopes, snow tubing, and other winter activities.
What I love about Camelback:
• Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark: While the indoor waterpark is a major attraction, the skiing is excellent, especially for beginners.
• Extensive tubing park: Perfect for a fun, family-friendly day!
3. Shawnee Mountain (East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania)

Shawnee Mountain offers a fantastic, family-friendly experience with a focus on affordable fun.
What I love about Shawnee Mountain:
• Excellent value: Lift tickets and rentals are often very reasonably priced.
• Beginner-friendly: Gentle slopes and dedicated learning areas make this a great choice for families and first-timers.
Choosing the Right Resort for You
The best ski resort for you depends on your individual needs and preferences. Consider these factors:
• Skill level: Are you a beginner, intermediate, or advanced skier or snowboarder?
• Budget: Prices for lift tickets, rentals, and accommodations can vary significantly.
• Travel companions: Are you planning a trip with family, friends, or your significant other?
Tips for first-timers:
• Consider taking a lesson, especially if you’re new to skiing or snowboarding.
• Pack layers—temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day or night.
• Check to verify if rentals are available on-site.
• Check the snow report before you go to ensure good conditions.
Tips for Planning Your Ski Trip
• Book in advance: Peak season can fill up fast, so secure your accommodations and lift tickets early.
• Check the weather: Monitor the forecast and pack accordingly.
• Most importantly, have fun! Relax, embrace the winter wonderland, and make the most of your time on the slopes.
Living in Delaware offers a unique advantage: easy access to some fantastic skiing opportunities. So why not take advantage of these nearby winter getaways and hit the slopes?
